- What is meant by the term ‘citizen journalist’?
Citizen Journalist is where not only the professionals are able to make news but now, the public are able to create news. This is mainly done through smart phones. The reason for this is due to the development of new technologies for example, smart phones and the growth of the internet and the increase of the dominance within user generated content. Who and what makes the news has been expanded due to increase of the new technology. This then leads to the rise of citizen journalist. Furthermore the rise of citizen journalist is mainly due to the increase of the smart phones as, this allows any user to film an incident and be able to post it up on the internet. Therefore if they have a large following they are then able to spread the news through a fast cycle.
2. What was one of the first examples of news being generated by ‘ordinary people’?
The first example of news being generated by 'ordinary people' was in 1991, this was the time where video cameras had become more popular as, more people were able to afford them, therefore resulting to them being used more. The story behind the incident in 1991 is, that four Los Angeles police officers caught Rodney King after a speed chase. Once they have caught him the officers then surrounded him and beat him with clubs, while also tasering him several times. The attack was recorded by a ordinary person who at that time was watching the assault from their apartment window. The footage was then posted online which then became a prime-time news episode as, it had become an international sensation. the officers who had assaulted Rodney King were then charged with assault and use of excessive force. however in 1992 they were then removed from these charges. This then sparked a huge upset in Los Angeles, which led to a 6 day riot by the public, where 53 people were killed and 400 injured. The cost of this riot added up to a billion dollars.
3. List some of the formats for participation that are now offered by news organisations.
As technology improved over the years, incidents of this kind have become more and more common. Millions of people have constant access to filming capability through their mobiles, and footage can be uploaded and rapidly distributed on the internet.

- User generated content is seen to be the four biggest social networking sites which allow you to come across the news and also put your point across of the news. The four major sites are, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and Facebook. People also turn to User generated sites to come across the news as, this way would allow them to put their point across and not only have to sit and watch the news
it makes for very uncomfortable viewing, and even today, it is easy to see why this minute and half of blurry, poor-quality film had such a huge impact.
