Virgin Media

Virgin Media strikes deal to show Netflix programmes

House of Cards

Virgin Media deal with Netflix’s means that they will be the first paid TV service in the UK to have the rights to show Netflix shows. This deal went through a week after the company had secured a £200m-plus deal with BT to screen its sports channels which provide premier league football games. How this deal will work is, Netflix’s will make their services available on Virgin Media's TiVo set-top box. Virgin Media are to launch this service into 40,000 homes this week which means that Netflix’s will be available to 1.7 million of Virgin's 4 million TV customers. Virgin Media's chief operating officer has said the reason behind striking this deal with Netflix’s is, that it will allow them to attract customers who enjoy the big screen experience. I believe that this idea will bring in many new customers to virgin, also my biggest belief is that this will make virgin a lot of money, as they are providing something their rivals are not. However Sky do provide movie channels which are mainly years old, also Netflix’s provide more of a variety of shows/movies.
