Citizen Journalism

Rodney King

The story behind the incident in 1991 is, that four Los Angeles police officers caught Rodney King after a speed chase. Once they have caught him the officers then surrounded him and beat him with clubs, while also tasering him several times. The attack was recorded by a ordinary person who at that time was watching the assault from their apartment window. The footage was then posted online which then became a prime-time news episode as, it had become an international sensation. the officers who had assaulted Rodney King were then charged with assault and use of excessive force. however in 1992 they were then removed from these charges. This then sparked a huge upset in Los Angeles, which led to a 6 day riot by the public, where 53 people were killed and 400 injured. The cost of this riot added up to a billion dollars. This story is significant in relation to citizen journalism as, this was the first citizen shot incident as, in 1991 camera phones were becoming more popular. This is then the video which started citizen journalism, this video also caused a 6 day riot in LA.

On the morning of Thursday, 7 July 2005, four terrorists who go by the names of, Hasib Hussain, Mohammad Sidique KhanGermaine Lindsay and Shehzad Tanweer planted three bombs in the London underground trains across London. Later that day they then planted a  fourth bomb on a double-decker bus in Tavistock Square. With the fouyr bombers present on that bus. furthermore 52 civilians were killed and over 700 more were injured. This was the UK's first suicide attack. The explosions were caused by home made organic peroxide–based devices packed into rucksacks. The bombings were followed two weeks later by a series of attempted attacks which failed to cause injury or damage. This is significant in relation to citizen journalism as, this was the UK's first suicide attack and a member of a public was able to record the incident before a professional was able to arrive at the scene.

The rise and rise of UGC

  1. What is meant by the term ‘citizen journalist’?
Citizen Journalist is where not only the professionals are able to make news but now, the public are able to create news. This is mainly done through smart phones. The reason for this is due to the development of new technologies for example, smart phones and the growth of the internet and the increase of the dominance within user generated content. Who and what makes the news has been expanded due to increase of the new technology. This then leads to the rise of citizen journalist. Furthermore the rise of citizen journalist is mainly due to the increase of the smart phones as, this allows any user to film an incident and be able to post it up on the internet. Therefore if they have a large following they are then able to spread the news through a fast cycle.

2. What was one of the first examples of news being generated by ‘ordinary people’?

The first example of news being generated by 'ordinary people' was in 1991, this was the time where video cameras had become more popular as, more people were able to afford them, therefore resulting to them being used more. The story behind the incident in 1991 is, that four Los Angeles police officers caught Rodney King after a speed chase. Once they have caught him the officers then surrounded him and beat him with clubs, while also tasering him several times. 3. List some of the formats for participation that are now offered by news organisations.

  • Message Boards
  • Chat Rooms
  • Social Media
  • User generated content is seen to be the four biggest social networking sites which allow you to come across the news and also put your point across of the news. The four major sites are, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and Facebook. People also turn to User generated sites to come across the news as, this way would allow them to put their point across and not only have to sit and watch the news
4. What is one of the main differences between professionally shot footage and that taken first-hand (UGC)?

it makes for very uncomfortable viewing, and even today, it is easy to see why this minute and half of blurry, poor-quality film had such a huge impact.

As technology improved over the years, incidents of this kind have become more and more common. Millions of people have constant access to filming capability through their mobiles, and footage can be uploaded and rapidly distributed on the internet.

Virgin Media

Virgin Media strikes deal to show Netflix programmes

House of Cards

Virgin Media deal with Netflix’s means that they will be the first paid TV service in the UK to have the rights to show Netflix shows. This deal went through a week after the company had secured a £200m-plus deal with BT to screen its sports channels which provide premier league football games. How this deal will work is, Netflix’s will make their services available on Virgin Media's TiVo set-top box. Virgin Media are to launch this service into 40,000 homes this week which means that Netflix’s will be available to 1.7 million of Virgin's 4 million TV customers. Virgin Media's chief operating officer has said the reason behind striking this deal with Netflix’s is, that it will allow them to attract customers who enjoy the big screen experience. I believe that this idea will bring in many new customers to virgin, also my biggest belief is that this will make virgin a lot of money, as they are providing something their rivals are not. However Sky do provide movie channels which are mainly years old, also Netflix’s provide more of a variety of shows/movies.
