Post-Colonialism

Post-Colonialism

The representations of ethnicity that we had saw within the clip was mixed cultures being displayed within the clip. One of the ways in which this was shown through the clip was when the girls were going to a party and their were a mixed representation of cultures being displayed. However this can relate to Fannons theory of putting on a white mask. The reason for this would be that in order for the black women who are being represented in the clip would need to fit in by getting all dressed up and following the tradition which is based in London by getting ready and going out on a Friday night for example a party or clubbing. This then shows the way in which people inside of London live their lives in order to "fit in". Furthermore also the representation of culture within the Olympics opening ceremony show a mixed family culture as you see a mixed of a black child who is on his Nintendo Ds and then you have a white mum who comes to get him to come inside. This then connotes to the audience the different cultures which are based within London. The clip would also promote a anti racism campaign as they would provide a multi-cultured cast within the opening ceremony which would vary from all around the world. This would then be done in order to show the representation of London, London is seen to be city with all kind of races as they not only live here but also, everyone within London mix with other cultures, this is shown through the different cultured girls going out on a night out.

Eurosport owner Discovery considering Premier League TV rights bid

Premier League: Chelsea v Manchester United

Discovery Communications, the new majority shareholder in Eurosport, is considering using its deep pockets to take on BSkyB and BT in the next multibillion-pound war for Premier league TV rights.
The owner of the Discovery factual channel, which has a market capitalisation of $28bn (£19bn), is eying up the UK sports right market after a deal last week to fast-track its acquisition of a controlling stake in Eurosport.Bidding for the next three-year Premier League TV rights deal is expected to start later this year, and the Discovery Communications chief executive, David Zaslav, told the Guardian that his company is considering a bid.

On Wednesday Discovery increased its stake in Eurosport from 20% to 51%,a year ahead of plan. Best known for Shark Week and other factual programming such as Deadliest Catch, Man Vs Wild and Sons of Guns, Discovery is now seeking to move into TV sport by expanding the pan-European broadcaster's clout in the 54 countries it operates.

French broadcaster TF1 is the other shareholder in Eurosport, which launched in 1989 but has not been a major player in the UK market. It is best known in the UK for its Tour de France and tennis coverage. Eurosport's website is operated as a co-branded partnership with Yahoo.

BBC rejected early version of Benefits Street two years ago

Benefits Street residents

Channel 4 documentary benefit street has brought its way back into the media for the second time within weeks. This time the documentary has now been linked with the BBC. It is to be seen that the BBC were to of wanted to show the show before channel 4 however, as the rumours suggest they were in early discussions but then decoded to pull out of streaming the documentary at the last minute. The story suggest that BBC had decided what they show would contain and who they would be participating within the show long before it had even appeared under channel 4’s radar. It is to be suggested that a company behind the love productions had approached the BBC around two years ago to discuss this matter of airing the show. A spokeswoman for this particular corporation had said that, "It's true that the BBC was involved in some early development on the programme but we decided not to take the project further,"  she then went on to say how could not understand what had brought the BBC to not go through with the deal and declined the project. However in the last few years the BBC have broadcasted shows which focus on this matter such as, We All Pay Your Benefits and Nick and Margaret. Therefore she then believes that at the time they had approached the BBC about this matter she believes the BBC were two minded on whether they would want to show a show such like that. Whereas she believes that other formats felt stronger about the matter than the BBC.

BBC targets social media users with Instagram video news

BBC news mobile consumption overtakes desktop

The audience have now decided that it is time for them to start to viewing videos and shows either from their tablet or mobile devise. For the first time ever during the month of December tablets and mobiles overtook platforms such as desktops. BBC have become aware of this change have attempted to reach out to their audience through Instagram videos. The world’s first teletext service broadcast had ran out in 2012. The teletext broadcast was described to be the updated version of text based new service for a digital device. Steve Hermann who is the head of BBC’s news broadcast online said that the trail was a response in the changes that were made to the media platforms. He believes that In order for the BBC to reach out to their audience they would need to target online and social media news. BBC also trailed a selfie broadcast. Where they filmed themselves from a mobile device provided the news towards the audience. BBC do not have other plan in taking another trail out on the social media platform however, they have stated that they will be keeping their eye out and monitoring any changes that may develop in order for them to be the first to react to the changes. I believe that this change will be more successful if they were to target the younger audience which it seems to be through using selfies. I also believe that this will be a very big success in the future in order to attract the younger generation to watch the news.

Telegraph Media Group made record £60m profit last year

The guardian had reviled that the Telegraph Media Group created a profit of more than £60m for the previous year. This is the third year now in which the guardian were able to increase their profits, also with the profit margins increasing year on end. The Telegraph Media Group will be announcing the amount they made during each month through the course of the year. Furthermore it is also to be told that they are looking at a record revenue within the spring season. This then looked to be a good year for the Telegraph Media Group. However for the past three years they were seen to have been at the top. Rival such as, The Times, The Independent and The Guardian, have not had the same luxury of profit margins as Telegraph Media Group as they have been in loss for the past years. Telegraph Media Group also had received an increase in subscriptions to their newspaper since it had launched its online paywall. The paywall was released in November 2012 internationally. It was then extended for domestic users a few months later into the following year of March 2013.
  • Telegraph Media Group made a profit of £58.4m in 2012
  • Telegraph Media Group had made a profit of £55.7m in the previous year being 2011.

Black Mirror and National Anthem

Black Mirror and National Anthem

The message of Black Mirror shows us how the internet has now become a a bigger part to news then the TV broadcasters. This shows that new and digital media has now overtaken traditional media within broadcasting news. This is mainly done through social media sites such as, Facebook and Twitter. The way in which they were able to present this to us was through showing the audience how much social media is an big element. One way in which they presented this was through showing how when the video was uploaded to Youtube it had created 50,000 downloads within 9 minutes. This then shows the amount of people who are active on social media and are able to react to these stories. This video was then Global around the world within the first 9 minutes. This then connotes to the audience the impact social media plays within the audiences lives. We were able to know that the video was to reach a global audience as CNN were showing the footage before any news reporter inside of the UK. Black mirror also told connoted to the audience the main users of social media being the younger audience. This was shown through the older audience wondering what the kidnapper was asking for assuming it was money. However due to social media such as youtube and twitter the son had already been exposed to what the kidnapper was looking for in return of the princess. This also connotes to use that new and digital media had overhauled traditional media in proving the news. This is due to the speed in which new and digital media can provide the news to the audience for example, through Facebook and Twitter.

Doctor Who gains in consolidated Christmas Day TV ratings

Doctor Who Christmas special

Doctor Who was broadcasted to the audience one week after Christmas day broadcasting the show to be the festive special over the Christmas period. The show managed to generate views of 3 million. Doctor Who increased their viewers from 8.3 million to 11.1 million which was published by the BBC on Thursday. The reason for the increase was due to the audience who have watched the show late, therefore providing seven days extra to calculate the views of Doctor Who. Doctor Who seems to be a show which is more popular on BBC Iplayer rather than a live show.

1. Mrs Brown's Boys, BBC1 11.52 million, 36.3% (9.4m, 35.5%)
2. Doctor Who, BBC1 11.14m, 35.33 (8.3m, 30.7%)
3. Coronation Street, ITV 9.82m, 30.9% (8.3m, 30.7%)
4. Downton Abbey, ITV 9.41m, 30.2% (7m, 27%)
5. EastEnders, BBC1 9.36m, 29.6% (7.8m, 29%)
6. Call The Midwife, BBC1 9.16m, 33.8% (7.1m, 30.1%)
7. Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1 8.84m, 37.9% (7.3m, 35.4%)
8. Toy Story 3, BBC1 7.33m, 39.6% (6.3m, 38.9%)
9. Emmerdale, ITV 7.07m, 25.8% (5.8m, 24.7%)
10. The Queen, BBC1 5.82m, 35.3% (5.7m, 36.2%)
BBC looked to be in control over the Christmas period as they were able to generate the 1st and 2nd place spots with their shows. However the only downfall which came from this period was that EastEnders were not able to generate as much views as they had first expected. EastEnders which is normally the most popular show on Christmas day fell short, also critics labelled this year’s EastEnders to not live up to the expectations of the audience. This may be due to the excitement they normally bring on Christmas days over the past years. EastEnders will also be very disappointed to have lost out to rival show Coronation Street which is broadcasted on ITV near enough the same time as EastEnders therefore, creating a rivalry between the two soaps.

Sherlock: nearly 10m viewers watch BBC detective's return

Sherlock

On BBC1 on Wednesday night the showing of Sherlock had reached up to 10 million views. The reason for this is the show contained Sherlock surviving the rooftop and how it all occurred. The show began with an average of 9.2 million viewers, from the showing from 9-10pm. The show peaked to 9.7 million for the first 5 minutes of the show. The show was broadcasted on Christmas day as a special. The show started with 7.5 million viewers in July 2010 of the first release, which it then increased to 8.8 million on news day of 2012. Sherlock had pulled in viewers of 33.8% shares of the audience. The show was streamed at the same time as Harry Potter on ITV therefore facing a high competition from rival channels. The movie itself was watched by 5.1 million viewers. With a 19.2% share of the audience between 8pm and 10.30pm. EastEnders on Christmas day was broadcasted at 8pm which they only managed to attract 7.3 million viewers with a 27.8% share of the audience. This then ensured that Sherlock received more views then EastEnders which is the leading show on Christmas day with a peak viewers of 10 million. EastEnders has also lost out to rival show Coronation street with the viewings as Coronation Street generated views of £9.82 million on Christmas day being overall the 3rd most viewed show on Christmas day. However the highest viewed show on Christmas day was Mrs Browns Boys generated views of 11.52 million.

Tindle group profit dips to £1.4m

South London Press

Sir Ray Tindle's newspaper generated a profit of £1.4m at the end of March 2013. The publishers of the newspapers had claimed that they have not closed any of their titles, and they are not working on refurbishing any of their previous titles.

Tindle Newspapers were in a loss overall for the 2013 period figures on show that prove this are,

·         Pre-tax profits fall from £2.06m to £1.39m in 2013.
·         Total revenues fell by 5% from £35.7m to £34m.
·         Group operating profit fell 28% from £1.78m to £1.28m.
During 2013 the company faces endless stress in creating a revenue. The main reason for this was due to the pressure of the newspapers attracting advertisements for their newspapers without advertisements this then left them with no fund allowing them to expand newspapers and fan base. However they were still able to launch 20 new local titles in London areas. One way in which they were able to save costs was to make staff redundant. The only members of staff which have not been made redundant are the journalists and the directors.

·         Staff costs dropped from £15m to £14.6m as headcount was lowered from 761 to 725.
·         Of these staff, 282 are listed as editorial and production, a 7% fall from the 303 employed at the end of the previous financial year.

·       Despite the cut in staff numbers, the publisher said it had steadfastly backed its newspaper portfolio and that there had been no compulsory job losses since the downturn in 2009.

Richard Desmond appoints Barclays to explore sale of Channel 5

Richard Desmond

Richard Desmond has decided that he wants to sell Channel 5. During this time he turned the well-known Big Brother show into a profit making show as, before he had taken over the show was in decline. In order for him to sell the channel he has hired Barclays to do so for him. However the sale is at a very early stage in the project. The two obvious candidates which would take over the channel and bid for ti would be ITV and SkyB. ITV are already by far the biggest advertiser funded broadcaster. SKyB are also likely potential buyers of the channel however, Rupert Murdoch has ruled out any bid for the channel. Channel 5 is also targeted by foreign buyers such as, NBC Universal or Time Warner. However the last owners RTL were based in Germany and found it hard to make a profit from channel 5. Desmond has stated that he is talking to rivals about the sales of channel 5. The most likely buyers being ITV.

·         Channel 5 is the smallest terrestrial broadcaster.
·         Channel 5 bought Northern and Shell Media Empire in 2010, which they bought from RTL for £103.5m. This is also included now in the sale with channel 5.
·         Securing the rights of Big brother has cut the loss of Channel 5 from the past six months from £48m to £20.6m.
·         Channel 5 could be worth around £400 million.
·         Espirito Santo investment bank valued channel 5 to be worth £500m.

·         Times reported Desmond is looking for around £700 million for the channel.
