Facebook buys UK maker of solar-powered drones to expand internet

Ugandan woman with laptop

This story is telling us about how Facebook are making solar powered drones in aircraft which will fly over countries in which can not afford the internet and will allow them access to the internet. This will then but them in straight competition with Google, who are planning to create internet access for countries through balloons. Facebook have claimed that they are looking to reach an audience of £1.2 billion. This would then take Facebook to their audience of 4 billion. This operation will cost around £12 million to conduct which has already been put into work."Our team is actively working on building our first aircraft now," Zuckerberg said in a paper published yesterday. My opinion on this story would be due to the increase in new and digital media this would be a idea which would work due to the fact that the internet is now becoming thew most pwoerful tool to humans as it allows them to reach and conduct near enough everything. However if Facebook are providing it country who are unable to afford internet the only setback i would feel there would be, is that how would they claim access to the internet through the technology. As Facebook may reach an audience of 1.2 billion, however would the audience be able to get access to the technology in order to use the internet.

Turkey blocks YouTube amid 'national security' concerns

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/27/google-youtube-ban-turkey-erdogan

Youtube Turkey

This story is about how YouTube has now been banned within Turkey weeks after they had already banned Twitter usage within the county. This is not the first time this has happened within in Turkey as they had banned YouTube within Turkey in 2007 which they then released this ban three years after it was put into place. The reason for this ban was that social media users within the Turkey were able to access "Virtual private networks". Therefore this being too much of a risk for the country to be able to risk. One of the issues which was raised  which came to a concern of Turkey was, a private conversation which was recording and then posted onto YouTube. The conversation was between Turkish intelligence chief Hakan Fidan, foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu. The conversation in which they had secretly recorded contained information discussing a possible military action in Syria. My opinion on this story would be that due to the increase of new and digital media it now has a large and importance within he world as their are many users. Social media is then an aspect which can be used for more bad then good. Therefore I then personal believe that the action Turkey have taken on banning social media is the right thing to do. The reason for this would be that if they were to recive vital information this could then lead to something the country may not want such as, offending other countries.

No-makeup selfies campaign generates £2m windfall for cancer research

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/mar/21/no-makeup-selfie-campaign-facebook

no make up

This years campaign for cancer research was a "no make up selfie." This campaign was put in place where women would take a selfie of themselves with no make up and post it on Facebook with the text they had sent showing that they had donated money to cancer research. Once they would nominate someone else this would then keep the cycle going as they would nominate as many people as possible. This campaign then had created a large awareness therefore providing donations of £2 million. This campaign was made successful do to social media as it enabled the audience to be able to quickly receive the information as it would appear on their news feed. I believe that this campaign was a success due to the fact it was able to relate to the audience and make it something that would create awareness to the audience therefore enabling them to interact. Furthermore I do not believe this would been a success without social media as it would not have reached it mass audience, therefore this reinforces the fact in which social media is now a large part of peoples lives therefore allowing them to create a wide audience which is shown through the amount of money raised. This campaign was also a success due to the celebrities who had taken part. Once they has taken part this then encouraged their following to do aswell due to them looking up to them as a inspiration. I believe in order for campaigns such as cancer research to create large donations they would need to do this through relating to the audience which is shown how it would work through the selfie campaign.

Jasmine Gardner: News travels fast in cyberspace but can we trust it?

http://www.standard.co.uk/comment/comment/jasmine-gardner-news-travels-fast-in-cyberspace-but-can-we-trust-it-9159845.html

This is a story which again talks about the trust we can have with news being put through to us through social media. social media allows us quick and easy access to news. When someone tweets the news on twitter it is then re tweeted by many people which then soon turns viral. This then means everyone is now aware of the news as it is trending. However it has now been brought upon us that not everything you see on the news is believable. The reason for this is that news which is being present to us through social media has no source of where it is coming from but however looks believable to the audience. One example of this is Manchester United Manager was seen to had been sacked from his position as it had been trending on twitter. However later on the audience had come to realise that this was a fake piece of news as there was no reliable source which could back this up such as Sky Sports. My opinion on this story is that i believe due to everything now becoming technology based that news online is now the way in which the audience will receive their news as it is quick and news travels faster through this therefore reaching the audience faster. However i believe that their will always be fake stories going around which i then believe it is yup to the audience to find the reliable sources before spreading it themselves.

Daily Mail and Guardian digital 'minnows', says News UK chief

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/mar/05/daily-mail-guardian-digital-minnows-news-uk-mike-darcey

Mail Online

This story is News UK expressing their feelings on what they believe that the Daily Mail and the Guardian are doing wrong. News UK do not understand the reason in which why The Guardian and Daily Mail provide their news for free digitally. They believe this for more then one reason. One of the reasons in which why they believe this is News UK do not understand how they will make their money if they are providing their news for free. The reason for this is that if you're providing your news for free digitally no one will then buy your newspaper as, in this day and age most people are going to check their news online rather then the traditionally way through newspapers. However it is also seen that newspapers are still making their money through the advertisements they receive. Furthermore if they are providing their news for free the audience are more likely to view their news therefore, leading to them seeing the advertisement. News UK also believe The Guardian and Daily Mail are not able to keep up with the new day and age as once newspapers are forever in decline and are not used anymore News UK do not believe that newspapers such as The Guardian and Daily Mail will not be able to stay alive. My opinion is due to many people now viewing newspapers online by providing it for free benefits the audience and the newspaper. The reason for this is that the newspapers will receive more advertisements which will give them more money as, the advertisements will know that they will receive a mass audience due to the newspaper providing their materials for free.

Feminism

Judith Butler

The first example would be Lady Gaga reinforcing the stereotype of how women should be deceived as. The normal women would be looked at as a real life version of a Barbie doll who wear make up and dress up to receive attention. However Lady Gaga while still receiving attention for the opposite reason of dress up as a man on a performance that would be broadcast to the world.

The second example I have used is a traditional way in looking at how a female is shown to be.This is an example of a female being traditionally shown on a make up advert with an agenda to sell make up to women in order for them to improve their appearance. This advert does not challenge Butlers gender theory as we are used to seeing women advertising make up.

This is an advert which reinforces Butlers theory of gender performances as it is an advert you would not be used to associated with men. The advert is trying to sell a mens cream in order for them to look after their skin. This would then challenge Butlers theory as men have now become more conscious about their appearance which you would more associate with females.

This advert is a Nike football boots advert. The advert reinforces Butlers theory of gender performance as, it shows men playing football and how the they will need the perfect football boots in order to play better. This is an advert we would be used to seeing as men are mostly connected to sports therefore seeing many adverts relating to this.

This poster is a poster promoting womens football and their upcoming schedules. This poster is challenges Butlers theory of gender performances. The reasons for this is due to we as the audience are not used to seeing female sports being promoted as, traditionally womens sport is not as popular as mens would be.

This womens beauty magazines reinforces Butlers theory of gender performance. This is a magazine which is targeted at women in order to provide them with tips to improve their appearance. This is shown through the quote on the front cover being"Improve your skin" as it reinforces that women have alot of provide within their appearance. The cover also follows a tradition to have a beautiful women placed on the front page which would make the women want to be like her.

This magazine front cover challenges Butlers theory of challenges Butlers theory of gender performance. This magazine shows Beckham who was a former football star. A traditional view in looking at a male would be for them to be manly. However this magazine challenges Butlers gender theory would be that men have no also turned their attention more onto their appearance which was previous only seen to be important to women.

This is a perfume advert for men which reinforces Butlers theory of gender performance. The reason for this would be that we would assume to see a male on an mens perfume advert. However this could also challenge Butlers theory as, this would show that men are now become more in conscious with their appearance as they now want to have the perfect smell.

www.games-info.zoomshare.comwww.games-info.zoomshare.com

This game is a nintedodog game which is seen to be alternative view of Butlers theory of gender performance. The reason for this would be that this game was created for females who would look after their virtual pet. However as the game developed they then targeted it at men. This is shown through the colouring they use as traditionally they would use pink which they have now changed to a mutual colouring.

http://www.nickjr.co.uk/play/#!

This game reinforces Butlers theory of gender performance this is a game which is targeted at females. The reason for this is due to the colouring of the game as it is pink which is seen to be a female colour. Also the character in the game is a female which tells us the game was created for females.

http://www.myfootballgames.co.uk/

This is a football game which reinforces Butler theory of gender performance. Butlers theory suggests that men would be more associated which sports therefore, we are then used to seeing football games which are targeted at men. This game also does not include any female characters or any signs of it being made for females aswell as males.

http://www.girlsgogames.co.uk/games/sports_dress_up_games/sports_dress_up_games.html

This game challenges Butlers theory of gender performance the reason for this would be that women are not normally seen to be playing sports or playing sports games. Therefore this then challenges this as this game is made and targeted at females. We know this as the game contains female characters therefore is seen as a females game.

Case Study

Case Study

The Case study I have chosen relating to new and digital technology is on demand. The reason I have chosen this as my case study is that it now plays a huge role in peoples lives due to the majority of peoples busy schedule they are not able to watch the shows on their original times therefore using on demand more. I also decided to choose this case study as, due to it large audience the merge between iplayers such as ITV and BBC are now available on Sky therefore, giving me a large amount of research to conduct which would then lead to me having a lot of areas to discuss on. This topic is also an area which I can link to other aspect such as advertisement. The way in which I am able to link advertisement to on demand would be through the way in which audience are able to fast forward therefore allowing the audience to skip the adverts.

The three Texts I will be looking at will be at as my primary source's will be,

  • Sky Go
  • Sky+
  • Sky on demand

Mock Exam

WWW- References to Text in question two and question Three.

LR - Include more theory and examples. Add a paragraph to question one and three.

Question 1

Text one and two both use dialogue in order to create enigma codes towards the audience through the dialogue which is used. this is done through the sound that is used. The sound of both clips is fast music which then connotes the genre of the film as telling the audience that their will be action taking place in the film. Furthermore the trailers also have low key lighting this then presents the horror side of the film. The editing of the trailers were fast. The reason for this would be that it would connote to the audience the action side of the film as by having fast editing within the trailer this allows them to start putting the audience on the edge of their seats before the film has started. the camera angles and shots which were used allowed the audiences to feel the emotions of the film which varied from happiness to sad to the ending of relief. The camera work also allows the audience to be giving an in site of how the actors are feeling throughout the movie.

Question 3

The uses of unofficial websites in order to increase the marketing side of the film as it may allow the movie to reach its mass audience. One of the positives they would receive from the unofficial websites would be they may be global websites therefore, this would then mean they would able to reach an audience in which the films representatives could not be able to reach for example due to the budget of the marketing team. unofficial websites are however not controlled by the distributors therefore not all the criticism they would receive would be positive. Therefore this would then damage the image of the film as the audience would be reading bad reviews of the film. Unofficial website would allow videos relating to the film to go viral. Also social media would allow the actors within the movie to promote the film directly to their fan base. This fans are more likely to watch exclusive videos and be encouraged to watch the film when told to by a actor/actress who they are following.

Channel 4 to broadcast footage of 9/11 New York attacks filmed from space

9/11 attacks

The whole of Britain will be provided with footage which some of them would have been waiting on for a very long time, as the footage being published is over 2 years late. The 9/11 attack which had taken place within New York which unfortunately had destroyed the twin towers. The footage which was filmed outside of space will be the first time shown on channel 4 for the first time allow the British public to receive an overlook view of what had taken place. The camera which was able to capture this moment was the international space station by the astronaut Frank Culbertson. My take on this story is that as it says that you can see a stretch of smoke after the crash had taken place therefore I believe, that all you would be able to see would a large amount of smoke therefore not allowing really providing much to the audience. Also I believe that after their crash had taken place from outside of space there would not be much footage which channel 4 would be able to show therefore making the audience wonder how long they would produce the program for.

BBC3 closure: now director of TV refuses to guarantee the future of BBC4

Danny Cohen

There is now controversy on whether BBC4 will be aired coming the following of the next licence renewal for the company’s decision. The decision has come after the BBC have decided to make BBC3 the only online broadcaster, this may be due to many reason in order for the BBC to save money and allow them to focus on one online broadcaster. This may also have been done as they would believe that there would be no need for them to have two online broadcasters as they would provide the same information. The closing of the BBC4 has affected the BBC has they see the closure as not the easiest due to the amount of time they have had it opened for. Which is around 11 years. However the BBC have no completely shut the service down as it will still be available on the BBC I player. When asking Richard Bacon whether he could respond to the future of the BBC4 channel he replied with, "The honest answer is no, I can't. We don't know for certain what will happen with BBC4 in the future”. This would then indicate too many people that the service will most likely be shut down soon. As people expect this closure would be due to the decreases of the financial side of the BBC which Richard Bacon goes on to support this fact.

David Walliams to star as BBC bags Agatha Christie drama deal

David Walliams

David Walliams will star in adaption on the BBC. The author who will be taking charge of this will be Agatha Christie the reason for this is due to the 125th anniversary birth. This scheme was also brought to be put into place as, it will allow the BBC to bring in some of the most well-known authors to have taking their work on the small screen. The BBC have already broadcasted some of the biggest names. These names are many of Christies work. However the author has heavy been involved with working with ITV over the past years. I believe that this deal was made by the BBC in order to allow them to bring in a larger audience in order to benefit themselves. However I do believe by the BBC brining authors in who are famous amongst the small screen will allow them to bring in the audience whether it is a success or not as, the audience will still want to find out how it turns out to be. Furthermore it seems to be looking to become a success the reason for this is statistics such as Christie most successful work selling more 100 million copies. This then shows that her fan base is large which will then tune in to watch her work with the BBC.

Universities being used as proxy border police, say academics

London Met

The guardian have received over 160 letters of complaints from University students who are expressing their anger to the UK border police invading the trust and privacy of the students. University are now under more pressure as the UK Border police are now checking their student’s immigration status in more detail. Universities such as Oxford, Warwick, Durham and Sheffield are clearly being looked into further as their academics are being looked further into therefore frustrating and forcing them to write to the guardian. The academics are accusing the UK force to of taking advantage of their powers and not having trust between the students and their university. This has also angered universities as they believe that the UK border police are also taking it to extreme levels. I believe that by the UK border police doing this is obviously going to frustrate not only universities but also students. The reason for this is that the trust of Universities is being questioned as they are stating that their security in which students are able to come into the university is not trust worthy.

Fast broadband now considered vital by increasing numbers of homebuyers

Woman with laptop

Houses who are able to connect broadband and receive signal which is good, fast and reliable will be seen to be worth about 20% more than an house who does not hold broadband and do not have a good broadband connection. It is now seen that fast good working broadband is an important aspect to homeowners and people buying the homes. Homeowners were before looking for areas in which have activities based around them, easy access to transport such as train station providing effective lines and running trains. Now fast connection has been added to list of expectations when buying a home. Estate agents have stated that due to the home connection people buying houses are looking to pull out of deals. I believe that if this is to be true homeowners are going to find it hard to sell their houses especially people who live in country sides areas also north houses. However I believe this will now only add complications to homes being sold such as, people will be looking to now get perfect phone reception as internet.

BBC and BSkyB reach agreement over retransmission payments

Tony Hall

Sky and BBC have been involved in a large debate for a while over the retransmission fees that BBC will be paying in order to play their demand service BBC IPlayer on Sky’s demand on TV. However they then finally came to a decision that Sky have allowed BBC to no longer pay to have their service within Sky’s TV Platform. This deal then saves Sky 4.5million. From BBC point of view this would then attract Sky more viewers as BBC IPlayer is the highest viewed demand service. BBC had proposed that Sky would have to start paying them in order to use their services on their TV Platform. This had then to the mind of the BBC has they wanting the annual fee to be decreased by Sky, however they were not arguing over the price therefore the BBC then played this card. BBC are not tge only one who saved money through this saga as, ITV, Channel 4 and 5 also saved money through this, ITV of saving around 2 million, as they had made the agreement over the last month. I believe that Sky would need to keep a hold of these platforms of on demand channels as people are more likely to use their services knowing they are able to catch up with their shows whilst they are being played on the TV.
